In some circumstances, such as a pending an investigation into serious misconduct, an employer might choose to suspend an employee. Suspension allows the employer to direct the employee to leave the workplace for a temporary period, and is only permitted if there is a clause included in the employment agreement. Suspension should not be used as a means to penalise an employee and as such an employee should be paid whilst suspended. Remember, allegations have not been substantiated against the employee at this stage. Download our free fact sheet today

The loss of a family member or close friend can impact people in many ways. An employee may be struggling with their grief and need to take bereavement leave. This provides them with an opportunity to take time off work to make arrangements, mourn their loss and attend memorials, funerals or services. As an employer, it’s important to know this leave is provided as an entitlement under the Holidays Act 2003. Employees are entitled to three days bereavement leave for the death of a close relative, and one day for the death of another close person. Download our free fact sheet today
