What health and safety documents does my business need?
There is no single fixed list for every business. The documents needed depend on the work, risks and arrangements in place. A manual and policy statement provide a core framework, supported by risk management documents, incident and training records, emergency procedures and other resources relevant to the work.
Can I use free health and safety templates?
Free templates and WorkSafe guidance may provide a useful reference point, but generic or AI-generated documents can appear polished and ready to use while failing to reflect the actual work and providing only vague controls with little practical direction. Regardless of the source, documents should be assessed against your workplace, discussed with workers and adapted before they are put into practice.
What H&S documents do main contractors usually ask for?
Requirements often depend on the stage of the work. When bidding for work, schemes such as SiteWise or Tōtika can help demonstrate your H&S capability and credibility. Once a contract is awarded, the main contractor may ask for site-specific documents such as an SSSP, JSAs, training and competency records, and relevant plant, equipment and hazardous substances information. How often should health and safety documents be reviewed?
Review them when work changes, new risks arise, an incident or near miss occurs, or relevant requirements change. They should also be reviewed at least annually, with more frequent reviews for higher-risk activities or where circumstances indicate they are needed.

They provide a strong, near-ready starting point aligned to your business and industry, saving you from beginning with a blank page. You can then involve your workers, confirm the actual risks and agree the controls that are right for your workplace before putting the documents into practice.
