All New Zealand citizens may at some stage be called up for jury service. If this occurs, employers must give them the necessary time away from work.
Employees attending jury service are paid an attendance fee from the Ministry of Justice, however, it is not intended to replace a wage or salary and is rather small.
While employers do not have to pay employees when on jury service, many choose to provide a top up payment, so an employee is not financially disadvantaged by jury service. Inserting a clause relating to jury service in employment agreements is best practice
