Bereavement Leave Fact Sheet

Bereavement

Share on:

The loss of a family member or close friend can impact people in many ways.

An employee may be struggling with their grief and need to take bereavement leave. This provides them with an opportunity to take time off work to make arrangements, mourn their loss and attend memorials, funerals or services.

As an employer, it’s important to know this leave is provided as an entitlement under the Holidays Act 2003. Employees are entitled to three days bereavement leave for the death of a close relative, and one day for the death of another close person.
