Automobile company Jaguar Land Rover has announced its plan to upskill 29,000 employees in UK. This upskilling is a step towards achieving their goal of electrification by the end of the decade. The company said its Future Skills Programme will train more than 10,000 Jaguar Land Rover and franchised retailer employees in the UK as well as nearly 19,000 workers across the world in skills related to electrification, digital and autonomous cars.

With unemployment at a record low, companies that offer upskilling and advancement opportunities are standing out in the labour market. A study by UiPath reveals that more than four in five workers are hoping their employers would offer them more opportunities to acquire new skills or to enhance existing competencies. 88% of employees said they would be willing to stay on with a company that invests in their digital skills development.

Upskilling

Upskilling is the smaller skills gaps you are always filling, like learning Excel skills or practicing a few tips to have better conversations at work. Filling these smaller skill gaps can be what gets you better and more productive in your current role and make you stand out.

Upskilling in the broader sense also means learning new skills (hard skills such as learning how to use certain software or basic graphic design) or improving soft skills (knowing how to manage office culture, handling difficult conversations, performance management). It can be anything that helps employees do their role better and adapt. Learning new skills to remain competitive is the most important way workers and employees can future-proof themselves against automation.

Skills also form the basis of talent searches. Recruiters often rely on skills data to find talent. It is a relevant and realistic way of helping fill roles based on what an employee can do, instead of degrees or titles.

The importance of upskilling

We have an urgent need and challenge within the global workforce. How can we equip existing employees with skills to participate in the changing economy? If we don’t act immediately, the skills gap will widen considerably.

Here are some key facts:

  • According to the World Economic Forumhalf of all employees in the world will need reskilling by 2025.
  • A survey shows that nearly 40% of workers fear their job will become obsolete in the next five years.
  • 40% of employees successfully improved their digital skills during the pandemic.
  • 77% of workers are ready to learn new skills or completely retrain.
  • Younger people are twice as likely as older people to get opportunities to improve skills, and people in cities are 1.5 times as likely as people in towns.
  • Sectors that suffer from low-wage growth and output could reap significant benefits from upskilling. Health and social care could add $380 billion additional GDP through upskilling by 2030.

Even before the pandemic, automation has been the single biggest threat to job security. Without undergoing upskilling or retraining, employees are fighting a losing battle as they can be displaced by automation. Some of the industries where workers are at a high risk of displacement are:

Small business and upskilling

As a small business owner, you may have limited resources and finances. You can’t compete with multinational companies with budgets for upskilling or retraining. How can you ensure you don’t lose out on talented employees?

  • Know your strengths- What can you offer employees? If you work in retail, consider letting your employees shadow other team members from different departments. As a small business owner, you can host workshops and training sessions for employees on different topics.
  • Support your employees- If your employees want to upskill personally, be supportive. Offer them flexible working arrangements if they are attending university or studying for a course.

  • Be prepared- You need to be prepared for the potential hurdles you may face. How can you handle excess workload if an employee chooses to pursue a course or studies along with their job?

Is upskilling a necessity or luxury?

According to data17 million US workers will see their jobs be less in demand within the next decade, and 80% of these employees may need to reskill completely, not just upskill. What these workers are facing is an existential challenge. For them, reskilling is a necessity. They don’t need to just upskill but completely change their way of working or using the skills they have.

There are visible inequalities in work and job opportunities.

  • 50% of workers say they’ve faced discrimination at work, which resulted in them missing out on career advancement opportunities or training
  • 13% of workers have reported they missed out on opportunities because of ethnicity
  • At least 13% of workers have reported discrimination based on social class or background

These inequalities will only increase if there is a consistent lack of access to upskilling. It is ironic because upskilling should ideally be doing the opposite-leveraging opportunities for workers.

Tips on Resolving Personal Grievances Early

In any relationship, even a good one, sometimes a person feels they are being treated unfairly. This can also be the case in a business relationship. A personal grievance is a statutory procedure for employees to challenge a dismissal or treatment they consider to be unjustified. Dealing with employee grievances is an unwelcome part of being an employer. However, when a grievance crops up, it is recommended you resolve the grievance as quickly as possible. That isn’t always possible, but here are some tips for when it is. The first steps The complaint doesn’t have to be in writing and can be raised if the employee has made it reasonably clear in enough detail to their employer that they have a personal grievance as set out in the Employment Relations Act.  If the employee does raise it verbally, however, the employer should take notes to avoid a dispute later. An employee has a right to raise a personal grievance within 90 days of when the grievance occurred or came to their attention. However, the employer may consent to a personal grievance being raised after that time. If the employer doesn’t consent, the employee may apply to the Employment Relations Authority to be allowed to raise the personal grievance after the 90 day period if they have exceptional circumstances. Where there is a complaint that relates to sexual harassment, the employee has 12 months to rase a personal grievance. For all other personal grievances, the time to notify the employer stays the same at 90 days. The employee should clearly outline the reasons why they believe they have a grievance in sufficient detail for the employer to be able to respond. Some complaints that can be raised by bringing a personal grievance include unjustified dismissal or disadvantage, discrimination, sexual or racial harassment, or duress due to union / non-union issues. What happens if I can’t resolve the grievance? An employer and their employee should always try to resolve the matter themselves. They should both check the employee’s employment agreement for the process to follow, and the available services that can help. In some cases, both the employee and the employer may wish to seek professional advice on how to deal with the specifics of the case.  Free alternative dispute resolution in the form of mediation is available through the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment if the employer and the employee cannot put their differences aside. If the matter still cannot be resolved, the employee can lodge a claim with the Employment Relations Authority. If an employee is successful in a personal grievance for unjustified dismissal, they may be reinstated if they want to be, unless the Employment Relations Authority decides it is not practical. Other remedies include reimbursement of lost wages, compensation for humiliation or loss of a monetary or non-monetary benefit, or representative costs. If an employer breached the law, they may also be subject to penalties. Unjustified dismissal is arguably the most common personal grievance, and employers need to take steps to minimise the risk to their business. An employer should only dismiss an employee on reasonable grounds after a fair process, and make sure the outcome is not decided in advance. The reasons for dismissal must be in writing, unless it is under a trial period. The contractual notice of the affected employee needs to be given unless they are being dismissed without notice for serious misconduct. If an employer takes all these steps and keeps appropriate records, it can help avoid personal grievances escalating. Ultimately, employers should take any concerns seriously, gather all necessary information, and work with their employees to try and resolve personal issues as soon as possible. Collaborating Remotely and Building Effective Teams Virtually

Many people easily picture traditional in-person team building exercises, but what do virtual team building activities look like? Are they effective in encouraging remote collaboration and building effective virtual teams over time? In short, yes. At length, also yes, and with the science and fun to back it up. What is virtual team building? Virtual team building is the development of strong remote teams in a digital space. Employees still come together to get to know one another and grow their skills interdependently. The only difference is that it’s conducted online, typically for remote employees who sometimes, rarely, or never meet in person. The end goal, whether onsite or online is the same: together everyone achieves more. What are the benefits of virtual team building? It may surprise you to find out that flexible work arrangements sometimes are not as flexible for the mind and body. Remote team members tend to work more than on-site workers. Burnout still happens to remote workers. The peace and independence that remote work brings can also feel isolating. While that’s a pretty random example, you see how a few icebreakers start conversations and allow virtual team members to get to know each other. A few side conversations are fine, as it sparks enthusiasm and innovation, but keep a list of icebreakers to keep your virtual team members on track. 2. Host a virtual games day/night Games and activities have brought people together for ages, and just because you share a virtual workspace, doesn’t mean anyone has to miss out! Host a virtual games day or night. Challenge the virtual team to scour the company policies and resources to complete a scavenger hunt. If you want to remove the company from the theme, make a list of interesting things to find both on the internet and around the remote team members’ homes. 3. Pin the map Create an interactive map that allow each virtual team member to pin their hometown. If you have a diverse team located around the world, see just how big the virtual team is while feeling closer to each other while working from home. Challenge each team member to share one fact about themselves. Alternatively, try creating a global Foodie Map. Each virtual team member pins their most memorable restaurant and shares their favourite dish. 4. Start a book club If you are using your Slack channel to discuss books about inspirational entrepreneurs, why not start a book club? The topics and genres can change each month. Schedule a once a month meeting with discussion prompts. Talk about the book during a virtual happy hour over video chat. Take it a step farther. Why not encourage employees to take 30 minutes each Wednesday to read the selected Book of the Month on company time? Approved activities based on remote employee input makes the culture richer and gives everyone a much-needed break that doesn’t “waste” company funds. Meanwhile, remote team members are both rewarded and motivated. Useful tools for virtual team building How do you host virtual team building activities? The good news is that you use most of the necessary equipment regularly, such as video chat, conference calls, Slack channels, screen sharing, and more. Think of the tools virtual teams use every day. This may be a great way to covertly encourage virtual team members to feel more confident about these tools: Virtual team members may take turns telling two truths and one lie on the Slack channel. Remote team members can use screen sharing to do show and tell. Make the most of video chat or conference calling as team members share their best actor/actress impersonations. There are no limits to your imagination as you get everyone to explore how to make the most of your team’s tools through your team building exercises. Measuring the effectiveness of virtual team building So, how do you know if these team building activities actually brought remote employees together or not? What if the virtual team members completed the exercises out of a sense of obligation rather than enjoyment and bonding? How do you measure the effectiveness of virtual team building on various departments, such as their morale, productivity, sales, or service? If you don’t ask, then you will never know. Surveys are a tried and true format as well as directly asking team members one-on-one. What did remote team members find most interesting or valuable? What did they learn? What would team members change? Did certain activities have a positive impact on their role? It is also smart to have baseline metrics regarding absenteeism, productivity, and the data of different profit margins and rates over different times (days/weeks/months) ready. Use this baseline to note any changes, both before and after, as well as over time for your remote team. You can also adjust how often you conduct team building exercises accordingly as you observe the metrics shift. Remember, together everyone achieves more—TEAM.
